Sonographic Evaluation of Scrotal Swelling in a Tertiary Care Center

Introduction: Scrotum is a cutaneous-muscular pouch containing a testicle, epididymis, and spermatic cords. Scrotal swelling can originate from intra-testicular lesions or extra-testicular lesions. Due to the diversity of causes and their distinct management options, timely and accurate diagnosis is crucial. Ultrasound is a key imaging tool for assessing testicular and scrotal swelling, effectively distinguishing between intra-testicular and extra-testicular lesions. This study aimed to evaluate the sonographic characteristics of scrotal swelling among patients presented in a tertiary care centre.
Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Radiodiagnosis and Imaging between 01 January 2021 to 30 December 2023 after obtaining ethical approval from the Institutional Review Board. The sonographic data of patients presented with scrotal swelling were taken retrospectively. The data were entered and analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 25.0.
Results: Among 500 cases, inter-testicular lesions were noted in 113 (22.60%) cases. Among intra- testicular lesions, the most commonly encountered lesion was orchitis. Similarly, extra-testicular lesions were noted in 387 (77.40%) cases. Among extra-testicular lesions, the most commonly encountered lesion was hydrocele.
Conclusions: The study’s findings are similar to prior studies in respect to the distribution of scrotal lesions. A comparable kind of age distribution are seen as well in similar studies.
