Study of the Clinical, Hematological, and Liver Function Profile in Dengue Fever

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is tropical flu and is the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne disease caused by a flavivirus.

METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study done over one year period with a sample size of 82 patients meeting the inclusion criteria. It was carried out in the inpatient department of Internal Medicine, Bir Hospital.

RESULT: In this study, there were 24 patients with dengue with warning signs and 3 patients with severe dengue. 20 patients presented with purpura, 3 with gum bleeding, and 1 with epitasis symptoms. There was a total of 21 patients with leucopenia and 73 with thrombocytopenia. Aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase are elevated in patients with dengue infection throughout the illness. Both levels were significantly higher in patients with severe dengue.

CONCLUSION: Dengue fever can present with a warning sign and severe dengue, which can be fatal sometimes if untreated. It is usually associated with liver injury and shock.
