Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is causally linked with a diverse spectrum of gastrointestinal clinical disorders. Early diagnosis and treatment of this infection helps to reduce significant morbidity and helps in prevention of serious life-threatening complications. We aimed to identify the prevalence of H. pylori infection in patients with dyspepsia and association of H. pylori with various clinical and endoscopic findings.

METHOD: We conducted cross sectional study over a period of six months after meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria. Ethical approval was obtained from Institutional review committee, Bharatpur hospital. Endoscopic findings and rapid urease test of biopsy specimens were documented and data was analyzed.

RESULT: Total number of participants were 150, of which 54 were male and 96 were females. Mean age of participant was 41.52 SD 14.8, minimum age 16 years and maximum age 88 years. Majority of the patients; 51% (77) were in the age group 26-45 years. Out of 150 rapid urease tests done, 101 had negative results and 49 tested positives for H. pylori. Patients with H. pylori positive results were more likely to have abnormal endoscopic appearance. Among patients with abnormal endoscopic results, 34.8% tested positive for H. pylori.

CONCLUSION: Endoscopic findings combined with Rapid Urease Test helps to easily diagnose H. pylori infection and peptic ulcer disease and thus helps in early initiation of definitive treatment.
